Design trends are constantly shifting. But it’s always exciting to think about rising trends for the new year, especially when it comes to kitchen trends.

Often people are put off making changes to their kitchens. That’s because many people worry that updating a kitchen will be an expensive and time-consuming undertaking. But it doesn’t have to be. There are plenty of things that can be done quickly and simply to update your kitchen’s looks and functionality. Of course, if a kitchen redo is in the cards, it’s also an excellent time to think about these new kitchen trends too.

Top 7 Kitchen Trends for 2023

Trend 1: Peaceful aesthetics

In 2023 we’re viewing our homes differently. We’re shifting away from the desire for perfect Instagram-ready show homes. Instead we’re embracing designs that reduce stress and make us feel peaceful and positive. This means less manufactured, simpler and more natural interior design choices. In your kitchen trends, think plants, inherited pieces, colours and more.

Natural kitchen colours that we’re seeing are blues, greens and neutrals. We expect to see kitchens with royal blue and navy – which continues to be popular – and lighter blues and greens as well. And rather than strict whites, we are seeing more warmer whites and sandy, earthy colours with pops of bright white accents.

Trend 2: Colourful cabinetry

We’re seeing beautiful colours that are coming through in deeply saturated ways. While we’ve always seen colours in kitchens, recently, the trend has been to use them as accents in an otherwise white or neutral theme. Now we’re seeing them as the main impact colour. This means with 2023 kitchen trends you’ll see more coloured cabinetry and furnishings throughout the kitchen as a whole.

Trend 3: Mixed materials & textures

People are embracing the things that make them happy. And that can mean an eclectic mix of materials and textures – whatever makes the homeowners happy. This might be a mix of old and new elements (which create a beautiful, lived-in feel). Or it might be a mix of wooden and metal features or even a mix of different metals. If you like both bronze and silver, or brushed copper and pewter, go for it!

Trend 4: Bold patterns

Along with saturated colours and bold design choices, 2023 kitchen trends and designs are bringing in strong patterns. You’ll see this in gloss, multi-coloured tile finishes in benchtops and splashbacks, and eye-catching geometric shaped tiles. These elements make a statement and complement organic and natural shapes in the rest of the kitchen (another 2023 design trend).

Trend 5: Cupboards (not shelving)

Open shelving has been popular for a while, but in 2023 we’re seeing this kitchen trend give way in favour of more traditional cupboards. This is primarily due to the upkeep (cleaning) that is required to maintain open shelving, which many busy families find difficult and time-consuming.

Of course, open shelving is still being used in many kitchens (and looks stunning). So don’t expect to see this kitchen trend fade away completely.

Trend 6: Family-friendly designs

Family-friendly kitchen design trends are on the rise for 2023. Kitchen island benches, great for family-style meals and arvo homework sessions, are even more requested than ever. They’re also great for extra storage and as a way to bring that communal element into the heart of the home.

Pet feeding areas are also a top 2023 family-friendly kitchen design trend. These functional spaces let you keep your pets food and water off the ground and beautifully situated. And with extra storage built in, you have a great place to store pet food and accessories.

Another fantastic idea is a dedicated homework zone. This could be as simple as a kitchen drawer set aside for schoolwork and supplies, or even adding a shelf and outlets for a laptop or tablet.

Trend 7: Unconventional benchtop finishes

2023 kitchen design trends are moving away from granite and marble (though the latter will always remain popular). Instead, we’re seeing a move towards unconventional finishes such as porcelain and quartzite. These other stones are gaining in popularity because of their fresh, unique look and beautiful strands of subtle colours that run through them.
