The Back Story

Canberra’s Kingston Foreshore has quickly become the place to eat following the opening of a whole array of new eateries in the ELEMENT complex.

Bella Vie Interiors was engaged to work with D3 Projects to bring to life the vision of two young Canberrans, who were inspired by the UK to create high quality, quick service burgers.

Their simple menu philosophy with an emphasis on food and drink pairings and quality local produce is delivered in a pared back minimalist fit-out. Polished concrete, timber, stainless steel and an abundance of glass deliver an authenticity aligned with their brand positioning.

Key Challenges

The key challenges in this project were delivering a low budget fit-out that looked as though it belonged in the line up of other new restaurants opening on the Foreshore, and working within tight size constraints to incorporate all the functional aspects of a casual dining restaurant.

The Key Elements

The starting point was to ensure the layout met the needs of a business requiring a fast turnaround of orders with the flexibility to adapt to the changing seasons of Canberra.

This was delivered using an open plan that flows outdoors, coupled with custom designed furniture allowing this eatery to cater for large and small groups all year round.

The Finishes

The finishes needed to deliver a raw, minimalist ambience and selections and their application were driven by a need to meet the clients’ budget.

Brace board often seen on building sites makes an appearance as the wall finish of choice; black form ply is used to deliver detail in doorways, display boxes and custom joinery; simple pine timber lengths is transformed into feature displays; and concrete provides a durable work surface for the counter as well as floor.

The Details

Bella Vie Interiors worked with D3 Projects to design and document a range of furniture incorporating recycled materials to be used both indoors and outdoors at Beef & Barley.

The brief, calling for the furniture options to be as versatile as possible, was met by incorporating materials from recycled timber pallets, forty-four gallon drums and cable drums along with angle iron, steel rods and black form ply to create a range of both low and high seating and table options.

The Results

The result is a simple, minimalist fit-out… the perfect pairing for this unique ‘burger and beer’ eatery.
